If you want a low-maintenance wedding with just you and your partner, but also make a trip out of it, where do you go? For Amanda and Ryan, they chose the most cliche place they could think of to elope: Las Vegas. And to make it even more memorable, they picked a drive-thru wedding chapel for the biggest day of their lives. For them, it was perfect.
Tell me about your relationship.
Ryan and I met on MySpace in high school when we were 16. We’ve always just done whatever we wanted. We never stopped to ask permission which is why we eloped. We wanted to focus on us. It’s what we’ve done most of our relationship.
After we graduated college in Colorado, we moved to Seattle. We’d never been here before, we just picked a city and left. It was super scary leaving our hometown. We’ve formed our only little unit and are figuring life out from there. We got a dog, Murphy.
How did your husband pop the question?
He took a day off of work and we went to a beach called Golden Gardens in Seattle. It was one of the first places we found after we moved here. We were looking for sea glass and I looked over and he was down on one knee and proposing!
Did you expect that to happen?
Yes kind of. [laughs] Only because he was so cute and awkward and it was sunny outside and he had a massive coat on. I was like, What are you doing with a coat? That was the only hint. He did good.
What were your wedding plans when you first got engaged?
Originally, I always wanted to get married in my grandparents’ backyard. Super low key with family. Then we had some family drama, so we changed our minds every week. We were going to do the courthouse here in Seattle, but then we wanted to make it more memorable and get out of town. So we decided on Vegas!
Why did you choose Vegas to elope?
Just to be cliche, I guess. Plus we heard of a limo drive thru chapel service so how can we turn that down?
That’s amazing. So were y’all mutually down for the idea to elope?
After so much family drama and wanting to get out of town for a bit, I think we realized that it was going to be the best way for us for our day and to focus on ourselves. That’s how we landed on Vegas. It’s super cheesy and plenty of methods to get married.
So, tell me about the wedding itself.
Getting ready that day was kind of a disaster. My dress burst open in the back and my tights ripped before we even got in the car to get there. We stayed at The Venetian and got downstairs in the limo to take us to the wedding chapel.
It was a drive-thru wedding chapel so we sat in the back of the limo and, like a Taco Bell drive-thru, he just opened up the window and there was the little guy and then we were married in like 5 minutes! Then we took pictures and the whole thing was done in like 20 minutes.
It was really fast and then we had In-N-Out Burger.
That’s amazing. What did the guy at the window say?
He asked us if we had vows prepared or if we wanted to use his and we didn’t so we used his. He was like, Okay hold each other’s hands and look deeply in each other’s eyes and repeat after me. So we did and then we were married.
That’s so cute. What was it like to have just you two there?
I honestly think it did work out for the best. We could really focus on us. Our relationship has really just been about us so I think getting married and just focusing on each other was important for us. Not having any of that drama and distraction helped us to just focus on each other.
It was really fast and then we had In-N-Out Burger.
Wait, you had In-N-Out Burger after?
Looking back, would you have done anything different?
I don’t know. It would have been nice to have a few friends there, but honestly it was perfect. Especially looking back at my wardrobe malfunctions. If I had to walk in front of anyone else, I would have freaked out. But I didn’t care. I thought it was funny. It was a good sign that I wasn’t stressed about it.
I really wanted a big wedding and the whole thing, but then the longer I thought about it, I just wanted a big marriage instead.
So how has married life been so far?
It’s been good. I mean, we’ve been together almost 9 years, so it’s not too dramatically different. Saying “husband” is super weird, but fun. After saying “boyfriend” for all those years.
Are you going to change your name?
I am, but I just haven’t gotten around to it. We’ve been together 9 years, we were engaged for 2 years. I’ll change my name eventually.
Who do you think eloping is a good idea for? What kind of couple?
I had such a good experience, so honestly, anyone. Weddings are so different for each couple but it just depends on what you want in your wedding day and in your marriage. At first, I really wanted a big wedding and the whole thing and all the pictures and all the people but then the longer I thought about it, I just wanted a big marriage instead. So it didn’t matter to me how I got married as long as I got married.
It depends on how you look at marriage and how you want your wedding. But for me, I had no stress that day but I still get to be married.
Our wedding day was getting married, then we went to In-N-Out, then we went straight to the Britney Spears Vegas show, so it was the perfect day for me.
That’s amazing. What did Ryan think of seeing Britney?
He said, “She was much better than I was expecting.” He was surprised he didn’t hate it.
